What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?

The idea of a capsule wardrobe is to group versatile, basic wardrobe pieces that can be restyled in many outfit combinations. The goal is to minimize your wardrobe with pieces that mix and match AND ALL LOOK FABULOUS. You want to focus on buying classic styles that won’t go out of style this time next year. Neutrals are your best friend when it comes to capsule wardrobes! They are flexible and can be worn tons of ways and with many pieces.

Tops

Let’s start with tops. My first picks were a classic white tee and a striped tee – timeless essentials that work on their own or as layering pieces all year long. Another versatile piece for summer is a square neck linen top. I included the white just because I lean towards lighter colors in the summer, but it also comes in black and brown. It’s perfect paired with a linen pant (I’ll get into those next!). I also included this eyelet top. The details are beautiful and it’s the perfect piece to add a little something extra to your everyday basics.

Bottoms

Moving onto bottoms, every summer wardrobe needs a classic pair of denim shorts in a nice light wash. I checked the reviews and it looks like these run big, so keep that in mind if you’re adding them to your cart. I also included both a dressier pair of shorts and a casual linen option.

A pair of wide leg linen pants is a must-have for summer. They can also double as swim coverup bottoms!

Dresses

One of my favorite parts of a capsule wardrobe is how easy dresses make getting ready. You can dress them up or down, and they work for just about any occasion.

I included three versatile options that are perfect for summer:

• A white linen mini dress: lightweight, breathable, and easy to throw on with sandals or dress up with wedges and statement earrings.
• A striped midi tank dress: a casual classic that works for everyday errands, beach days or travel!
• A beige midi dress: so easy to style with different accessories, whether you’re heading to brunch or date night.

Shoes

Neutral sandals are a no-brainer for any capsule wardrobe. You can’t go wrong with a pair of classic white sneakers that work with everything from dresses to denim and a pair of neutral heeled flip flops for casual days when you still want a little lift. I also couldn’t forget a pair of clear heeled sandals either. They’re perfect for dressing up any outfit without clashing with your look – I have and love this pair.

Accessories

Last but not least, accessories!! I don’t like to overdo it with accessorizing. Not only can it weigh down an outfit, but having too many accessories in your closet can quickly feel like clutter, so I stick to the basics. Every capsule wardrobe needs two bags – a small bag to carry just the essentials like this straw belt bag and a larger neutral bag like this woven purse.

I’ve also been really loving a silk or satin scarf as an accessory like this one. You can tie it around your neck or even tie it to your bag for a fun pop of color. Living on the beach, I’m partial to the pretty coastal blue color but it also comes in lots of other pretty colors and neutrals too!
